Playlist for Life wins top prize at national awards

Following a rigorous selection and assessment process, Playlist for Life has been chosen from more than 400 charities across the UK as overall winner of the 2020 GSK IMPACT Awards.

Back in March 2020 we were announced the good news that we were chosen as one of 10 winners of a GSK Impact Awards. Today we’re delighted to say that we are joint overall winners of the prize, alongside Maundy Relief.

The overall winners were chosen from the 10 winning charities last year, and will receive an additional £10,000 on top of the £30,000 awarded to all winners.

The awards are designed to recognise the outstanding work of small and medium sized charities working to improve health and wellbeing in communities across the UK. As winners, Playlist for Life receives £40,000 in unrestricted funding as well as expert support and leadership development provided by The King’s Fund.

Katie Pinnock, Director of UK Charitable Partnerships at GSK, said:

It is rare to have two overall winners of the GSK IMPACT Awards, we were so impressed with Playlist for Life’s incredible impact helping people with dementia. It has taken a simple concept and used it to deliver profound results, providing a way to connect to the past and helping families living with dementia. Its evidence-based approach is highly impressive, with trials in hospitals and care homes showing that people with dementia need less medication when Playlist for Life is included in their care.

Michelle Armstrong-Surgenor, Executive Director at Playlist for Life, said:

We are excited and honoured to be joint winners of the overall award. This funding, training and development helps us to reach even more people living with dementia, their families and carers, who have been hit particularly hard by the coronavirus pandemic.

Our charity began with one family’s discovery of the power of personalised playlists, and our mission from day one has always been to share this knowledge with other families and carers affected by dementia. Personalised playlists are a simple concept that really work, as we have seen in so many care homes, hospitals and family homes over the past seven years. We’re thankful to GSK and The King’s Fund for helping us reach even more people who could benefit from the power of personal music.
